Choosing an Ethical Cavapoo Breeder in Texas
Safari Doodles meets every major standard that families should use to identify a reputable Cavapoo breeder: verified health testing, structured early development, in-home raising, and full transparency. We have bred dogs since the mid 1980s and have produced Doodle puppies in North Texas since 2009.

When families compare Cavapoo breeders, the most useful questions are about ethics, not appearance. Are the parents health tested, and can you verify it? How are the puppies raised? Where do the parent dogs live? Will the breeder stand behind the puppy for life?
This page answers each of those questions for our Cavapoo program, with links to the records and articles that support every answer. Cavapoos are the main focus of our breeding program, and we raise them in private family homes in McKinney, Aubrey, and Flower Mound, Texas.
1. Health Testing and Health Guarantees
Every Safari Doodles Cavapoo parent is both DNA tested and OFA tested by veterinary specialists, and every puppy comes with a written two year health guarantee.
Genetic screening of every parent
Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Poodles, and Cavapoo parents are DNA tested through established canine laboratories, including Embark, Paw Print Genetics, and Animal Genetics. Embark panels screen for more than 200 inherited health conditions, including variants relevant to both Cavaliers and Poodles. See an example in Cavalier father Peter’s Embark DNA results.
We use these results to plan every pairing. Most single-gene canine diseases are recessive, so a puppy must inherit the same variant from both parents to be affected. We make sure two dogs carrying the same recessive variant are never bred together. Read more in How Safari Doodles Health Tests Our Cavaliers, Poodles and Cavapoos.
OFA physical evaluations by veterinary specialists
DNA cannot tell us whether a dog has sound hips or a healthy heart, so every Cavapoo parent also completes physical evaluations recorded with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA):
- Hips: x-rays evaluated by three OFA radiologists for hip dysplasia.
- Patellas: veterinary exam to confirm the kneecaps stay in place.
- Eyes: examined by a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist.
- Heart: Cavaliers and Cavapoos are examined by a veterinary cardiologist, and many also receive an echocardiogram.
Cardiologist testing matters most for Cavapoos. Cavaliers carry a strong inherited risk for mitral valve disease, and a cardiologist with an echocardiogram can see the heart working rather than only listening to it. Many of our parents hold OFA CHIC status, meaning they completed every breed-specific screening and the results are public. Examples include Peter and Marcel, two of our Cavalier fathers. Meet all of our current Cavapoo fathers and mothers.

Genetic diversity by design
Cavaliers have a very small gene pool. Crossing a carefully tested Cavalier with a Poodle gives an F1 Cavapoo about half of its DNA from outside that gene pool. Kennel clubs in Finland, Sweden, and Norway now run official Cavalier outcross programs for the same reason. Learn more in our Cavapoo Health and Genetic Diversity Guide.
A two year health guarantee in writing
Every Safari Doodles puppy is covered by our Puppy Purchase Agreement and Two Year Health Guarantee:
- Two years of coverage: through the puppy’s second birthday, against serious congenital or hereditary conditions, including orthopedic, cardiac, eye, and neurologic disease.
- Three day illness protection: covers serious illness already present or incubating when the puppy left our care.
- Clear remedies: families may keep their dog and choose a refund or a replacement puppy of comparable value.
The agreement is published in full on our website, so families can read every term before they place a deposit. It is also linked from our Puppy Data page.
2. Early Development and Enrichment
Safari Doodles Cavapoo puppies follow a structured development program from birth, including Early Neurological Stimulation, staged socialization, and early potty and manners training. Read the full program in How We Raise Our Doodle Puppies.
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)
ENS is part of our early handling program. Research links positive early handling and neurological stimulation with calmer behavior, more confident exploration, and better stress tolerance. From their first days, we handle, observe, and get to know each puppy as an individual. Learn why ENS matters in our Doodle Temperament Testing article.
Socialization in stages
- From about 3 weeks: puppies hear music, household noises, alarms, and voices at varied volumes, and are handled by men, women, and children.
- Recall from the start: we say “come” every time puppies move toward us for food or play, building a positive association with recall.
- From about 6 weeks: supervised outdoor walks with their mother and littermates in our fenced yard, exploring grass, gravel, and new surfaces.
- Safe exposure: puppies meet adult dogs, people, stairs, and a doggy door, using only animals and areas we know to be safe.
Every experience is chosen to be positive, age appropriate, and confidence building, not simply to expose puppies to as much as possible. See the full schedule in How We Raise Our Doodle Puppies.
Potty training and manners before going home
Our Cavapoo puppies begin potty training before they leave us. They learn to use a litter potty box in their playpen and to go outside on grass and gravel. They also learn to mouth toys rather than people, to play gently, and to move confidently between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Families go home with our detailed puppy-raising guide, which covers crate and playpen setup, potty training, and the products we use. Our reviews mention it often. See also our new puppy shopping list and how we feed our puppies.
Temperament testing and puppy matching
At about seven weeks, each puppy completes the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test. We combine those scores with weeks of daily observation and our knowledge of each family line to guide families toward the puppy that fits their home, children, schedule, and other pets.
3. Home Environment and Living Conditions
Safari Doodles Cavapoo puppies are born and raised inside our family homes, never in kennels or barns, and our parent dogs live as family pets.
Raised in the living room
Safari Doodles operates through three private family homes in McKinney, Aubrey, and Flower Mound, Texas, all part of one coordinated breeding program. Our Cavapoo puppies are raised in the living room with their mother and play outside in the yard. We keep their living areas clean, fresh, and comfortable.
Families who visit notice the difference. One buyer who met our Cavapoo puppies described the home as clean and peaceful, and another chose us because we are clearly not a puppy farm. Read more on our reviews page.
Parent dogs live in guardian homes
Through our Guardian Home Program, many of our mothers and fathers live full time with carefully selected North Texas families. They receive daily attention, training, and companionship as family pets.
- Guardian families complete an application, an interview, and a written agreement.
- Safari Doodles coordinates health testing and breeding-related veterinary care.
- When a dog retires from breeding, it is spayed or neutered and stays permanently with its guardian family.
This means no Safari Doodles parent spends its life in a facility cage. You can meet our current mothers and fathers on our blog.
4. Transparency and Accountability
Safari Doodles publishes its health records, its full purchase contract, and its customer reviews so families can verify everything we say.
Health records you can check yourself
We encourage families to verify parent health testing in the public OFA database rather than relying on any breeder’s claims, including ours. Our parent profiles link directly to each dog’s OFA and Embark records. For example, Cavalier father Peter’s page links to his OFA results and Embark DNA results.
Our health testing history goes back more than 20 years. The OFA database lists 117 Doodles carrying the Safari kennel name, starting with parent dogs born in 2004. See the records in 20+ Years of Safari Doodles on OFA.

A written contract under Texas law
Our complete Puppy Purchase Agreement is posted publicly. It spells out deposits, health coverage, claim steps, and timelines, and it is governed by the laws of the State of Texas. Families know exactly what we promise before they commit.
Lifetime return policy
Safari Doodles will take back any dog we bred, at any age, for its entire life, if the owner wants us to take it. This is written into Section 14 of every Puppy Purchase Agreement, so a Safari Doodles Cavapoo never has to end up in a shelter.
A long, verified reputation
We have matched Doodle puppies with families since 2009. Our Safari Doodles Reviews page collects five-star reviews from Google, Facebook, and Yelp, each linked to the original post. They include:
- Repeat families who came back for a second Safari Doodles puppy.
- Owners of adult and senior dogs, ages 5 to 8 years, describing healthy, well-adjusted companions.
- Cavapoo owners who chose us because our Cavalier parents are heart tested by a veterinary cardiologist.
- Therapy dog owners whose Safari Doodles passed Canine Good Citizen and therapy evaluations.
Our dogs have also been raised for service work, including diabetic alert dog prospects, through professional trainers and service dog programs.
